Facebook is shutting down FriendFeed, the small, News Feed-like social network it purchased in 2009. In a blog post today, FriendFeed noted that “We’ve been maintaining the service since we joined Facebook five years ago, but the number of people using FriendFeed has been steadily declining.” A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the news, adding that the FriendFeed community is now “just a fraction of what it once was,” and that it’s time to start “winding things down.” FriendFeed said it will no longer be accepting new users, and that existing users have until April 9 to view their posts, messages, and photos. After that, the service will shut down entirely. Reports at the time of the acquisition pegged the price Facebook paid for FriendFeed at about $50 million. Via Re/code.
